Global Aphasia

Aphasia on the Road: Ryan and Jess’s Journey of Hope

Exploring Michigan, understanding Global Aphasia, and celebrating courage and connection.

Right now, I’m on vacation in Michigan, traveling in our camping van and enjoying the beauty of the state and city parks. Between hunting for Petoskey rocks, wandering through farmers markets, and climbing the dunes at Sleeping Bear Dunes National Park, I haven’t had much time to write a long post — but I have something meaningful to share.

This trip, I’ve been reflecting on Global Aphasia and the inspiring people who live with it every day.

Learning from Ryan and Jess

Today, I want to share a powerful Facebook video featuring Ryan Perry and Jessica (Jess) Sulecki — two remarkable people living with Global Aphasia, a severe form of aphasia that affects speech, understanding, reading, and writing.

Ryan, age 37, had a stroke 4½ years ago. After years of hard work and therapy, he’s now able to say his name again — and can speak about 150 words. I first met Ryan through his incredible bird photography on Facebook. His work captures the beauty and detail of wildlife, from delicate hummingbirds to majestic raptors.

Jess, age 32, had her stroke 2 1/2 ago. Although she still can’t speak, she has found creative ways to communicate — using her phone, gestures, and her radiant smile. In the video, she sits with her caregivers, her father interviewing her and her mother filming. Jess’s warmth shines through — a reminder that communication is about so much more than words.

Determination and Friendship

Ryan and Jess both show extraordinary determination. They continue to move forward despite frustration and loss.

Ryan even drove 500 miles to meet Jess in person — the first time he had ever met someone with a similar level of Global Aphasia. Their meeting was more than a friendship; it was a moment of deep understanding between two people who truly “get it.”

Finding Meaning Beyond Words

There’s nothing easy about losing language, reading, or writing. But Ryan and Jess show us that a full, meaningful life is still possible. Each person with aphasia has a unique journey — and each one can discover new ways to connect, create, and contribute.

Their courage reminds us that communication is about connection, persistence, and heart.

Fantastic News! ❤️

Ryan and Jess recently announced on Facebook that they are in a relationship. Their story is one of resilience, compassion, and hope — two beautiful souls finding strength in one another.

They remind us that love, like communication, can take many forms — and that determination and kindness can build bridges even when words are few.

Closing Thoughts

As I explore Michigan’s lakes and forests, I’m reminded that life — like language — is a journey. Ryan and Jess’s story inspires me to keep searching for connection, meaning, and joy in every new experience.
